France Confines Cruise Ship Passengers Over Gastroenteritis Outbreak The MS Sovereign of the Seas, carrying nearly 2,000 passengers from various countries, was confined by French authorities in Le Havre after an outbreak of gastroenteritis spread rapidly through its crowded decks.

Operated by Royal Caribbean International, the mid size cruise ship had set sail from Southampton, England, with a week long itinerary that included stops in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Hamburg before returning to Le Havre.

Of the roughly 1,900 passengers on board, approximately 400 fell ill with symptoms of gastroenteritis, including severe diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach cramps.
