IRS Staff Shortage Leads to Unpaid Taxes

The Taxman Cometh (Not) The Internal Revenue Service has been grappling with a severe staff shortage. As of 2023, the agency is short over 10,000 employees compared to its peak in 2010.

This reduction is largely concentrated in areas critical to taxpayer service, such as customer assistance and processing refunds.

Budget constraints, mandatory retirements, and voluntary separations have all contributed to this staffing crisis.
