Exports generated 5.7 billion euros ($6.6 billion) in sales last year alone, supporting around 30,000 direct jobs and requiring roughly 100,000 seasonal workers for the harvest.

Gobillard remains optimistic about this year’s crop, saying he is “very happy with what I’m seeing.” However, there is little time to spare – every day counts in the pursuit of preserving quality in a record-early harvest.

The Logistical Nightmare

The early harvest has also brought logistical challenges that threaten to upend long-held practices. With some workers still on summer vacation and others facing transportation delays, producers are being forced to rethink their approach to hand harvesting. Gobillard’s goal to complete the harvest at his estate in about nine days is a testament to the industry’s resilience.

However, commercial director Geoffrey Bonnet-Gobillard notes that these pressures could eventually force producers to reconsider some of their most cherished traditions.
